Developed in line with National Occupational Standards, it is recognised as the benchmark for quality and compliance in the UK water industry, and other industries which necessitate that work b conducted in confined spaces deemed "medium risk".

Because this qualification is recognised nationally, a worker trained on this course will be seen as a competent entrant and entry controller by a wide range of employers.

Course content closely mirrors the risks and work procedures to be found within real-world medium risk confined spaces. It simulates the environments of sewers, pits, silos and chambers, where a strong awareness of hazards and emergency procedures is required.

This course is designed for individuals who are required to enter confined spaces or act as an entry controller as part of their job role.

It is suitable for those working across a wide range of industries. This includes, but not limited to: utilities, water and wastewater, construction, engineering, maintenance, and industrial environments. Typical roles include confined space entrants, entry controllers, site supervisors, maintenance operatives, 'top men', water treatment operatives, drainage and sewer workers, and any other personnel responsible for overseeing entry and work within medium risk confined spaces.

What Is Classed as a “Medium Risk” Confined Space?

A medium risk confined space is an enclosed or restricted area where hazards may be present, but the risks can be adequately controlled through a safe systems of wor

These spaces feature limited access, where risks such as poor air quality, electrical hazards, liquids, or hazardous substances may be present or introduced during the entry.

However, these risks do not involve the severe or life-threatening dangers typically associated with high risk confined spaces. Therefore, safe entry can be ensured through an entry controller, who handles risk assessments, isolation, ventilation, atmospheric monitoring, with minimal need for complex emergency arrangements.

As such, entry controllers do not need confined space rescue training, or instruction on the use of breathing apparatus.
